The Wynn Pulls out of Bid for Slots in NY

    Monday, November 30th, 2009

The Wynn Resorts company is a luxury casino located in Paradise, Nevada. Named after casino mogul Steve Wynn, the $2.6 billion resort covers about 210 acres of the city.  If you visit the Wynn, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the huge amount of amenities available. There are 2,716 rooms that range from the small 640 square foot rooms to the 7,000 square foot villas. You’ll also find a 111,000 square foot casino, huge amounts of retail space and a convention center that rivals other centers from around the world.

Despite its opulence and grandeur, the Wynn recently decided not to complete a bid for slot machine lincensing in New York. The company surprised industry insiders by making the decision. They were formerly requesting rights to run the slot machines at New York’s famous Aqueduct Racetrack. It is pretty common for racetracks to be looking for slot parlor additions in an effort to increase revenues. The recession has caused many racetracks to close down, file bankruptcy or struggle financially. Slots parlors have been a clear savior for many racetracks in the US and having a successful company like The Wynn run them seemed to be a sure-fire way for the Aqueduct Racetrack to turn its finances around for the better.

The Wynn just released their financial papers and a healthy financial position showed. Despite their success in the market, the company decided to withdraw their bid for running the slots parlor in New York. If they did have the bid, the company would have been benefiting from 4,000 new slots in the New York facility. No one knows what the true reason for withdrawing their bid was, but one thing is for sure: the Wynn is staying out of the game of slot machines from now on. The company announced that after their withdrawal.

Although the Wynn is no longer a contender for running the slots at Aqueduct Racetrack, both Penn National and MGM Mirage are. The two companies are vying for the position and the Governor of the state is expected to announce a winner shortly. Only time will tell which company wins the bid and if the Wynn made a mistake by withdrawing their prematurely.

Wynn Looks for Slots Parlor/Race Track Bid in Queens

    Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Wynn Resorts Ltd. is planning big expansions in the near future. The company is bidding to redevelop the Aqueduct Racetrack in New York’s Queens and operate a 4,500 slot-machine parlor there. The company recently sold $500 million of bonds, 40% more than planned, to be able to make the bid. Billionaire Stephen Wynn has made it clear that he plans on winning the project which would be New York City’s first slot-machine contract.

If the Wynn does get the contract, the money generated will be used to fund other projects. They include the Cotai Strip in Macau, and cash for various other endeavors in Asia. An analyst stated, “Wynn is amassing cash and liquidity. The show of strength—cash, the ability to raise cash and the valuation now inherent in the equity of its Las Vegas and Macau subsidiaries—make a strong case for what is expected to be roughly a $400 million to $500 million project.”

The Wynn currently is a leader in the casino world. It’s valued as a $27 billion resort and is the flagship property of Wynn Resorts Limited. Currently it has over 800+ slot machines and various table gaming. There are over 2,700 rooms that range in size from 640 square feet to their 7,000 square foot villas.  The resort has earned AAA five diamond, Mobil 5-star, and Michelin 5-star ratings and is considered to be one of the top casino floors and hotels in the United States.

Wynn is trying hard to get the contract but only time will tell if it truly works. There are other companies looking to capitalize on the Queen’s slots parlor and Racetrack project.  With the numbers in gambling consistently growing, it’s easy to see why this is a much coveted project. People believe that the most lucrative market to move into is gambling because of its consistent numbers throughout the recession. Though numbers overall fell, they never fell at a rate that was parallel to other markets and they seemed to recover much more quickly.  Analyst Michael Bloomberg stated, “Casinos felt a cash crunch like every industry, but they still had billions of dollars in cushions to fall back on. Other industries didn’t have that. For this reason, casinos are going to be one of the first industries to recover and start making money again.”
