Criminals Using Slots to Bring in their own Revenue

    Friday, April 29th, 2011

The world of slots gambling is coming up with more problems as it continues to grow. The sheer number of gamblers who love to wager now is growing exponentially. That is putting gaming companies on the lookout for the latest innovations and changes to keep them all happy. One thing that anti-gambling activists have worried about for decades though is the rise in illegal activities when people are wagering. The gambling industry is a $3-billion dollar industry and that is set to more-than double in coming years. That means that people are getting a clear message- gambling is profitable. There are more incidents now than any other time involving crime. This is exactly what anti-gambling activists warned. They believed that once people were aware of how lucrative the games were they would inevitably try to get their own part in the money. This is where people are right now and there are more problems. One thing that is happening is convenience stores in off-road locations are trying to sneak slots games into their businesses. What better way for a weary traveler to spend a few hours than to play a few slots games? They know how lucrative the games can be and they know how much they can pay out if they get lucky, so why not? There is an issue though if the games are not approved though.

Games that are not approved are not taxed by the state and the state is losing money on them. State legislators are trying to shore up the rules to make sure that there are fewer incidents. The games are popular and need no extra maintenance. That is part of the draw to the games and why so many business owners are trying to get in on the money available. Because the games aren’t taxed though, state legislators are worried about the continued establishments of the games. They are difficult to monitor though because travelers rarely report games in a corner of a gas station or a convenience store. Normally travelers are just there to kill a few hours and maybe grab something to eat as they fill up their tanks. This is what is making it more difficult for states to find the locations and close their gaming pursuits down.

More Illegal Slots Gaming Activity in the US

    Thursday, April 28th, 2011

The issue of illegal slots gaming is on the rise throughout the US. More and more people are taking their chances at the activity, somehow thinking that they aren’t going to get caught. In the past month or so there have been internet cafes that have games illegally stationed throughout their floors. There have also been bars with illegal games in operations. There have been convenience stores with games set up in the corner for gamblers to take advantage of. The draw of course is just how lucrative the games really are. The fact is that slots games are some of the most popular games you are going to find in the casinos today. There are plenty of different options you have with the games and that is making business owners that more excited about taking them for their own purposes. The games of today are also varied so whatever the preference of the gamer, a business owner can find it. Consider that if a business owner sets up a game in an unassuming corner, he or she can easily bring in hundreds of dollars. Even if the game takes only $1-wagers, if just ten people wager on it for an hour each, that could add up to $1,000 extra dollars throughout any given day. Business owners don’t have to maintain the games in any way either so they can easily set the games up and let them work autonomously—they can almost forget about them as they continue to work on the central focus of their business.

This is the draw of the games, but police are coming down on people who are operating the games illegally. The problem of course is that the games are not being taxed and people are not being protected. Who is to say that the owners of the games aren’t tampering with the payouts and making it impossible for people to win? Who is to say that owners of the games aren’t tampering with the payouts and limiting them for people? Task forces are being formed throughout the US to handle the issue. Police are seizing machines and money, while making arrest around the country for illegal slots gaming activities. If you see a game, be sure to steer clear, or at minimum ask if it is legal. That could be the thing that pushes the owner to get the proper regulation or remove the machine altogether.

AL Makes Illegal Slots a Class A Felony

    Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

One of the concerns anti-gambling activists have had over the years is the question of elevated incidents of illegal gambling. They believe that if gambling is legalized, people will truly see the huge dollars working their way around the market and take advantage of it for themselves. They may see that there are millions of dollars available and try to steal from a casino or patrons. They may try to get into money laundering or other illegal activities. The problem with gambling is that it is a huge-dollar market and bringing that to different communities could be too much of a temptation for them to manage. Anti- gambling activists also believe that if legislators want to legalize and regulate gambling they are also going to have to have to increase their police forces and create task forces. The question of how far people are going to go with gambling has yet to be seen but there have been more incidents than ever involving illegal gaming. One problem arising is more people holding illegal slot machines. They believe that the games are increasing in singular locations around the US and legislators are trying to come down on the activity. In Alabama it is proving to be an issue and Senator Taylor wants to create specific penalties for possessing and operating illegal slots.

Right now there is a new bill on the table to make possessing an illegal slot game a Class A felony. Right now the activity is only a misdemeanor. The Senator also believes that the new bill should include any electronic bingo machines that are currently in operations within the state. This is going to be an issue for the state to regulate because of the sheer number of games that are classified as bingo games, rather than straight slots. This is a hefty law and it will take some time to get it pushed through. Legislators also are going to have to create a strict definition of what they consider to be “slots” before they move ahead with this new law. It will take them time to sort out, but most likely Senator Taylor is not going to let the issue sit for very much longer.

    Illegal Slots Activity in Texas

    Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

There are more illegal activities going on in the gambling market. One of the biggest issues that anti-gambling activists had for a long time prior to the move to legalize gambling was the rise in crime. They believe that this is an inevitable repercussion of legislators who are pushing for legalized gaming. The issue is that people are going to see the full possibilities financially with games and want a piece of the pie themselves. Though some legislators denied that this is a possibility, it is proving to be an argument. Now there was another arrest in Texas regarding the games. This time it was the owner of The Gold Fish who ended up being arrested for operating 169 slot machines. They also seized over $22,000 in cash coming from the games. This was another incident though that supports the argument that legalizing gaming is an open door for illegal activities. This was another incident of business owners who believe that they can use the games to build up their own revenue. Remember that slots games are highly lucrative. Consider that in this location there were over 150 slots games for people to play. Even if the games were bringing in just $50 a day, that still means that they are bringing in $7500 a day. Just think of how much that adds up to in just one week…or one month…or even one year! It is no wonder why so many slots are being set up by business owners. The games are no-trouble and require no direct operational aids either. You just set them up and people play.

This is a new issue that Texas is trying to tackle. The issue of illegal slots gaming is coming to a head right now for Texas and other states. Business owners realize how lucrative the games are and are building on them considerably. The legislators who operate the states have to come up with new regulations that are going to manage these illegal activities. They know that money is plentiful but if games are not regulated, then businesses are operating them without paying taxes on them. This is what legislator have to find a reasonable way to manage in the future.

Ohio Having Problems with Illegal Gaming

    Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

The state of Ohio is now in the midst of some issues in regards to illegal gambling. There have been elevated levels of illegal gaming throughout the country, just like anti- gambling activists first predicted. They believed that once people and business owners got wind of how much money is involved in the market of gambling, they inevitably would want some way to take advantage of it. Ohio legislators are seeing just that with illegal slot machines around the state. The games are being promoted as just “harmless games” but they are actually illegal slots. Normally it is the internet cafes that are setting the games up and then managing them for additional money. There is no other game that operators or business owners can set up to bring in the same amount of money. Consider that a good slots game can bring in hundreds of dollars every hour of operation. The added bonus though is that the games are worry-free. You don’t need to man them in any way so operators can set them up to work in a side corner and never think about them again other than emptying their hoppers of money. It is a great way for them to attract more gamblers and bring in more money. What business wouldn’t want the opportunity to make hundreds of additional dollars with no extra effort?

Ohio suspects that cafes throughout the state are doing just that- setting up the illegal games under the guise of “bingo” or “video games”. They are then benefitting from the revenue coming in without being taxed on any of the money. They know that there are huge dollars to be had and want privy to them…even if it is illegally. State Attorney General Mike De Wine though is trying to come up with laws to handle the situation. Though the games in these cafes are not technically “slots games” they are still bringing in revenue and the state needs to regulate them as if they were slots games because of that. The bottom line is that the state wants its cut of any revenue coming in. This is what the new arguments are all about and why new legislation is going to be put into place.

Virginia Officials Fight Illegal Slots Gaming

    Saturday, March 26th, 2011

Many state legislators love the idea of slots games being brought in. They understand that slots can bring in millions of dollars every month. They also know that a good casino can create jobs for the market. In today’s post- recessionary market that is a huge advantage. There are still long lines at the unemployment office and finding new jobs is a great way to come up with quicker revival. There are plenty of states that would love to use slots as a means of generating revenue. On the other hand though, there are still some states that are holding out. Virginia is one of those states. The state’s legislators have computer-based sweepstakes games that are highly similar to slots games. Originally it was North Carolina that had to deal with the issue and forced the game out via proper legislation. Though they dodged the bullet, now Virginia is up. The legislators within the state are trying to do the same thing and veto the games. The games are very similar to slots games but the debate is whether or not the games fall under the same rules as slots games. The debate is still in the works though and there is no definitive answer to the games right now.

In the state of Virginia there are some issues of closings. Some locations in the state are using the computer- based games already. State officials are moving in on the games and the locations to shut them down immediately. So far there have been two large locations that have been shut down by police. Until some decision is made though, the changes are not going to be made in making the games legal. The argument is that the games are just too similar to games that were already banned, so there is no chance that they will be allowed. Right now there is a hefty debate though still going on. Legislators are pretty staunch though. They believe that the games should remain in the illegal category and police should continue to come down on establishments that are offering them. It may take time to move throughout the state though to get rid of all of the games, but that is the intent of officials until something changes.

The Issues with Illegal Slots Gaming

    Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

One of the main concerns of anti gambling activists was the rise in crime. They believed that if legislators legalized slots gamine and gambling in general, it would inevitably open the door to crime, money laundering, fraud and corruption. Though this is not yet proven, there are some signs that they could have a point. There have been rising numbers of incidents throughout the states involving illegal slots gaming and illegal games being stationed in off road locations. Of course this is illegal because the operators are not contributing a part of their revenues to the state like other legal locations do. Normally a casino contributes between eight to eleven percent of their revenues directly to the state they are operating in. Another problem is that the games set up in off-road locations are not regulated in any way. People playing them could be easily scammed into thinking the games payout at a certain percentage, when the games can be rigged to never payout. Putting money into them is as good as throwing it away. This is causing officials to come down on locations and owners who are using illegal gaming as a means of increasing their own revenue streams. It isn’t an easy fix, but legislators are trying to find solutions. More and more convenience stores and gas stations are cropping up with their own illegally operated slot machines. Their locations are the way they manage to fall under the radar.

There are regulations for slots gaming and that means that people cannot operate them without a license to do so. This is the biggest problem for gamers who are not in the market long enough to understand that if they see a slot machine at a convenience store, most likely it isn’t regulated. These machines normally would be operational if they handed out only prizes under a certain value determined by the state. If they hand out cash rewards though, this is where they get into trouble. One by one states are shoring up their rules regarding gaming and slots regulation, but it will take time to completely get it out of the market altogether.

Illegal Slots Gaming Still Plaguing States

    Saturday, January 22nd, 2011

There are more illegal activities coming about in the world of gambling. Remember that it was the anti-gambling activists who warned that there would be increasing problems as slots gambling was legalized. They believed that once people got wind of just how lucrative the games were, more and more would be trying to find their own ways into the market—legally or illegally. This is exactly what is happening, because there are more instances of illegal slots gaming coming up around the world. The problem with illegal slots though is that they are not regulated. They put people at a disadvantage because who knows whether or not the games pay out on the schedules they promote? Every slots game has a sticker that tells the gamer how much it pays out and the rules of the games. The pay table is something that every good slots gamer takes seriously. In a casino or at an online gaming parlor, these are regulated by third-parties that make sure the games are payout out on their noted schedules. With unregulated games, this is a definite issue. The operator of an illegal machine can easily rig the machine to never pay out, leaving the player at a huge disadvantage. Not only is that false advertisement, but it could be construed as theft in some courts.

In Santa Cruz County California there was an incident of illegal slots gaming recently taken care of. The games were 25¢-slots that were seized. They were operating out of the La Esperanza Market. There is some leeway for games. If they hand out small prizes, they could still be considered legal. The issue comes in when the games hand out cash prizes. These games set up at the Esperanza Market were handing out iPods, $20 and $50-bills to the gamers who were lucky enough to get wins. This made them definitely illegal. It is estimated that the games were bringing in between two-to three-thousand dollars a month in revenue for the store—revenue they obviously were not paying taxes on. The games were seized and the owners are now being brought to court on charges. This is just one more example of how difficult it is to regulate the games but now vigilant police have to be about the issue.

MI Attorney General Sues Bay Mills Indian Com

    Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

There are a lot of problems in the world of gambling. Right now the very fact that things are expanding so rapidly is making it a task for legislators to keep up on what they need to do to keep regulating the market. The Michigan Attorney General is now trying to shut down the state’s Bay Mills Indian Community slots parlor. So far there is a federal law suit in play and the reason is because the slots parlor is built on land tha tis not owned by Indians. Therefore, it does not fall under the same protections that other land does. The casino is located in Vanderbilt Michigan and it is up for debate now. If the casino is closed, that would include the removal of over forty different slots games currently being offered at the location. So far legislators are communicating with tribal leaders via letters. There are two sides to the issue, but the Tribal Leaders believe that they have the proper paperwork in order to keep operating. They opened officially back in November of 2010 and filed all the necessary paper work to continue with their slots parlor operations. The state is currently seeking an injunction to close the casino down until further notice.

Right now this issue is causing a lot of other problems for the state. Namely, it is the Little Traverse Bay Bands who are voicing their displeasure of allowing Bay Mills Indian Community to keep on operating. The Traverse Bay Bands run Odawa Casino resort in Petoskey, Michigan. They believe that if Bay Mills is not payign the taxes they are supposed to, when why should they. They believe that because the other casino is not on Indian owned land, this is threatening their own contract with the state government. They are stating that this is a breach of contract and refusing to pay their own revenues as a result until this situation is thoroughly sorted out for them. The state now is left to continue the debates and come up with some valid and reasonable solutions to the issue. Only time will tell what they do and how things turn out for both tribes involved.

Florida Police Seize Ten Illegal Slots Games

    Saturday, January 15th, 2011

In Florida there are still some issues with slots gaming. This time it is the fruit slots games that are causing some controversy. At a small location called Café Raul you can play the machines for one-dollar at a time. The games look like slots and operate like them, but they pay out free games or extra time to play. There is no transaction involving money other then the gamer putting in his or hers. The owner of the establishment is stating that the games are a far cry from the high-payout casino games that legislators are debating over right now. Sure they are in the midst of changing laws regarding them, but the games here don’t pay out any cash rewards. This is what the owner claims set them apart from gambling games. The police department of Miami disagrees though.

In October of last year the police force descended on the café to seize 10 similar gaming machines that they felt were a little too close to the “slots game” heading. They believe the games are classified as slots and therefore illegal to operate without the proper licensing. The issue is coming to a head with whether or not the game are “slots games” or “strategy games.” This could determine whether or not they are allowed to continue operating. On one hand, legislators claim that the games have reels, offer a prize and take money. They believe that this makes them gambling games. On the other hand though, café owners believe that the games should be legal because they are programmed differently than your average casino slots game and they also have a strategy to them. With some practice, players can master them and winning is in their own hands. This is what they believe distinguishes the games from regular slots games. Police believe however that all of the machines similar to slots games are to be considered illegal contraband and up for removal by the department. Right now the two are going head to head trying to showcase their own arguments. It will take time to sort through the issue, but it will be a prime focus of legislators in the coming year.
