It also began with two hosts, Ryan Seacrest and Brian Dunkleman.  Dunkleman has since been let go. 

The show has unknown talents audition for three judges. If they make it through the qualifying rounds, they are sent to Hollywood. If they make it through Hollywood, they are sent to the big stage in front of a TV audience of millions.  Each round widdles down performers until only the most popular are left.  Once the show goes to TV viewers are allowed to call in and decide which American Idol contestants to keep and which to send home. Each player gets their own phone number and votes are tallied. The following day, the results are revealed. 

In the past there have been three consistent judges: Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson.  Each one has their own involvement with the music industry and offers their constructive, and sometimes not so constructive, criticism of each contestant’s performance. Abdul has made a name for herself as the most “motherly” and “caring” of the three judges. She’s offered her opinion from the perspective of a former performer herself.

This year Abdul made headlines by hinting she wouldn’t be back to American Idol for the ninth season.  Many speculated the decision was because Seacrest, the only host to remain, was offered a huge multi-million dollar deal with the show’s producers, while Abdul was offered a few million to continue her judging role. 

In Vegas and online, people started official betting polls on whether or not Abdul would eventually be joining the show or not.  A lot of internet gambling websites were taking bets on her.  One online website was asking for a bet of 150 to win 100 if she permanently left the show and 150 to win 100 if she got her raise and returned.   In the end, Abdul left the show, or so it seems.  Announcements were made that rotating “guest judges” would be taking her place throughout the ninth season of American Idol.
